We have established many times that when we know what we do not want, we simultaneously can see more clearly what we do want. When we get this, it clarifies that we have a choice about where to put our focus.
With all the events swirling around us in the news and in the world, I’ve recently come across a lot I don’t like or don’t want. Lately, I’ve been meditating in the mornings on the awareness those feelings give me about what I do want, what I do like, and what does feel good to me. It also reminds me to distinguish between what is and what is not within my power to control.
There are so many things that are not within my power to control, but I don’t always want to give up my efforts to control them. Sometimes, it feels like giving up control is giving up on the results I want, but this really isn’t so. Giving up trying to control things that are out of my control is really just giving up the resistance to the reality of what is and all the tension that creates within me.
The reverse is what is actually true. By giving up my futile need to control everything, I move into a state which allows me to actually receive the results I’m seeking. Just like a radio, I must be tuned to the frequency of the music I want to hear. When I relax and loosen my resistance to the things I cannot control, I simultaneously open up the space to notice, align with, and receive the things I do want and can positively affect.
This week, practice relaxing your resistance and need to control the things you can’t. Remind yourself of the huge variety of things you can control such as your responses, thoughts, beliefs, effort, priorities, gratitude, habits, personal health (think whole foods, sleep, movement, hydration), and what you consume in terms of apocalyptic media and toxic conversations. We do have control over these things. We can realign our inner being to the availability of all that we dream of and wish for. We hold the steering wheel in our hands. Don’t give up the purposeful and useful control of your life and work to the futile attempt to control what you can’t.
