Keep the Vision. Change the Plan.

I’m writing to you from my underground bunker, typing on my sterilized keyboard, looking through my blue spectrum glasses at the screen that has represented my view of the world for the last two months. Okay, it’s not actually quite like that (though it has felt that way at times).

We’re all resurfacing, or about to resurface, back into the world. And by most accounts, we’ll be stepping right into an economic recession. All of our lives have or will be affected. Some have lost jobs. Others have depleted their savings. Many businesses, if they haven’t already had to shut their doors, will have the daunting task of rebuilding in a recession.
I’m not going to say that this isn’t the end of the world (though it isn’t), and I’m not going to say that this wasn’t a big deal (it was/is). I am going to say that every single time there is adversity ahead of us, there is always opportunity. Always.

Businesses that changed the world were born in past recessions. Some people who were laid off will now start amazing new careers. Most of us will find new ways to do old things and even better ways to accomplish our dreams because we have to.

Whether we were a student, employee, or business owner, all of us had a vision for our future along with plans to make it happen. I believe, whatever your vision was, you should hold onto that with a death grip… but you will probably have to change the plan.

Telephone and Patient Communication Skills:  For example, part of my vision at LionSpeak was to help more administrators accelerate their careers by learning how to convert more incoming phone calls to appointments. COVID has not changed that vision, but instead of our “best option” starting with an on-site visit, we’ll now be offering virtual options as well as online workshops. We’ll also immediately be including and expanding our coaching to include specialized COVID communications with patients.

Leadership and Team Culture: Another part of my vision is to help owners, managers, and team leaders to communicate from a strong leadership position and grow their people to be self-starters, independent thinkers, problem solvers, and high-level communicators. I’m on a mission to help teams raise the quality of their culture and communicate with one another in a mature, productive way. COVID has not changed my vision at all. In fact, it has strengthened my belief that, now more than ever, teams need to be expertly led and work together at a higher level. But instead of holding expensive workshops around the country and Team Calibration Retreats only on-site, we’re creating ways for teams to get this training quickly and affordably.

Your vision and your passion shouldn’t (and doesn’t have to) change because of COVID. Your plan and strategies will.

My vision is for LionSpeak to be the industry leader in extraordinary, unscripted communication skills training. COVID has only strengthened that mission. How we deliver our training will become refreshed, and more powerful, immediate, and accessible.

We can do this. We will do this. And so will you. Keep the vision. Change the plan.
