All my clients want one thing: Results. That’s it. They want results. They want a team that performs at a high level. They want to achieve their goals. They want to enjoy their work. They want to build a respected, productive, and profitable business. They want to make a positive impact. At some level, they simply want a result. And I don’t have a single client who can do this on their own, alone. They will absolutely need the help of other people to obtain the results they want. And all results start with good communication. Let me show you what I mean…
You see, if you need a team to help achieve results, then you need them to work together. You need teamwork. And to get teamwork, you need committed people—people who are committed to the vision, aligned with the values, and accountable to the goals and standards.
But to get that level of commitment, your people will need to trust you as a leader and trust each other as teammates—trust that they’re on the right road, using the right tools, aligned for all the right reasons; trust that you’ve got each other’s backs, that you care about each other’s experience, that you are doing your very best and bringing your best selves to the effort; and trust that you want to win, not as individuals but together as a team.
But, to get that level of trust, you’ll have to communicate in a very particular way. You’ll have to paint a clear and compelling picture of where you’re going, why it matters, how you’ll get there, and who you all have the power to become and to impact along the way.
And, for this message to truly land and be believed, your people will have to feel safe enough to ask their questions, get the clarity they need, and share their fears, doubts, and feelings. As leaders and managers, to get that level of deep buy-in, you must build safety for your people.
Ultimately, the core of good communication is always safety. Bottom line is that in a partnership, on a team, or in a marriage, if people feel safe to question, speak their truth, express their opinions, and articulate their feelings, then you build trust. When you build trust, you build commitment. When you have commitment, you get results. There is no other way around it.
To create safety, leaders must go first. They must practice communicating well, which includes testing for clarity, asking questions, encouraging honest dialogue, being curious, listening intently, reflecting back, being open and transparent as well as intentional, inspirational, and responsible in the decision-making process.
Once your team believes there is true safety embedded in your communication standards, you will build trust. They will trust that your decisions are well thought out and sound, even if they aren’t exactly the ones they would have made. They will know that they always have a platform of respect and that their voice matters. They will believe you have the team’s best interest at the core of your initiatives, and they will follow you where you want to go. Once you have this level of trust, you have everything you need to build a committed team that works well together and absolutely helps you accomplish your goals and vision.
Safety supports communication.
Communication builds trust.
Trust builds commitment.
Commitment gets results.

“A team is not a group of people who just work together. A real team is a group of people who trust each other.”
